Where potential meets purpose
The Guiding Star Leadership program is an integral part of the mission and vision of Nama Youth Guardians: to equip young people with the tools they need to transform the world.
Even before its official launch, the academy has already evolved in concept—proof that it is a dynamic, living program. As times change, so does leadership. The world is calling for leaders who lead with heart and wisdom, with courage and clarity of vision.
This academy is not a “miracle factory” that instantly produces leaders. Instead, it provides aspiring young leaders with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to grow into strong, resilient changemakers capable of shaping the future.
The program has two branches:
1. The internship – a 3-week program designed for international students. Participants receive advanced leadership training, develop public speaking and presentation skills, engage with topics like governance and social welfare, and complete a community project. This project requires them to step into leadership by managing a team and delivering a real-world impact, culminating in the awarding of a credited certificate.
2. The Development Program – designed specifically for JAM Kids leaders. This branch builds critical leadership skills over twelve months, including teamwork, project management, communication, and emotional intelligence. A unique focus of this program is lesson facilitation; to earn their certificate, they must successfully plan, present, and execute a lesson with younger JAM Kids, demonstrating their growth as both leaders and mentors.
Key areas of focus across both branches include:
•Foundations of Leadership
•Communication & Public Speaking
•Project Management
•Emotional Intelligence & Self-Management
•Politics & Governance
•Community Engagement
As part of our commitment to international collaboration and cultural exchange, we plan to partner with the Quartz Valley Indian Reservation in California, a Karuk community that offers summer internships for its youth. Each year, we aim to invite two to three of their students to join our three-week Leadership Academy in Port Nolloth. This exchange will:
1) Introduce local youth to Native cultures from across the world.
2) Allow American interns to experience Namaqualand’s rich heritage firsthand.
3) Foster cross-cultural understanding and broaden perspectives for all participants
Beyond leadership training, this program will inspire young people to envision opportunities beyond their communities. Additionally, the internship program will be self-sustaining, as international interns will pay a fee to attend—directly supporting Nama Youth Guardians’ programs.
